Which Fantasy Character are you? [Oct. 16th, 2008|11:48 am]

Galadriel

Galadriel

Possessing a rare combination of wisdom and humility, while serenely dominating your environment you selflessly use your powers to care for others.

Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.

Galadriel is a character in the Middle-Earth universe. You can read more about her at the Galadriel Worshippers Army.

Strange, I'd say the result is unexpected.

Time to Watch The Daily Show more often [Sep. 5th, 2008|08:26 am]

This is hilarious and a prime example of why fake news can be so much more informative than the real stuff.

I'm a dwarf apparently [Jul. 21st, 2008|09:13 am]

Your result for The What Middle Earth race do you belong to Test...

Dwarf

You scored 0% Size & Strength, 76% Morality, 59% Aggression, and 88% Intelligence.

You're a Dwarf! You scored high on everything to get here, so congrats on that. Though maybe you should have that temper checked out, huh? That much aggression can't be good for you. Anyway, the Dwarves are one of the primary races of Middle Earth, along with Elves and Men. Known for their great mining and crafting skills along with having tremendous might in small packages, the Dwarves are highly suspicious of anyone that's not a Dwarf. And why shouldn't they be? They've been run out of all their ancestral homes through the years by Orcs, Dragons and Balrogs, making them Middle Earth's largest collection of dispossessed people. So hey, you'd be grouchy too. They also have an unfortunate tendency towards greed, and can become obsessed with obtaining precious materials. Despite all that, the courage of a Dwarf is never to be doubted.

FYI, your polar opposite is the Warg.

Well, the questions are rather flawed - especially if I'm coming out as aggressive. But it was a fun waste of time anyway.

NPR to cut Science Friday [Jul. 16th, 2008|08:26 pm]

This is just upsetting beyond words:

NPR is cutting funding by 60% for the immensely popular Science Friday starting in October, as part of budget problems. SF has 1.3 million listeners per week and 10 million podcast downloads plus science videos, blogs (it has the only full time science reporter based in Beijing), and more. It is one of the successes in engaging the public in science but also talking to scientists ourselves.

An email forwarded from former NSF director Rita Colwell, says the show is short about $500K of the annual $950K budget, which means Science Friday will either go off the air or stay on in a greatly diminished form until or unless new funds are found. What's most surprising to me is that NPR says it will no longer seek foundation underwriting for Science Friday: Rita says if Science Friday is to stay on the air, it is up to the scientific community to raise the money for it.

The Hermit [May. 8th, 2008|11:11 am]
For whatever reason, I decided to yet another test - snagged from cherylmmorgan.

You are The Hermit

Prudence, Caution, Deliberation.

The Hermit points to all things hidden, such as knowledge and inspiration, hidden enemies. The illumination is from within, and retirement from participation in current events.

The Hermit is a card of introspection, analysis and, well, virginity. You do not desire to socialize; the card indicates, instead, a desire for peace and solitude. You prefer to take the time to think, organize, ruminate, take stock. There may be feelings of frustration and discontent but these feelings eventually lead to enlightenment, illumination, clarity.

The Hermit represents a wise, inspirational person, friend, teacher, therapist. This a person who can shine a light on things that were previously mysterious and confusing.

Discover the talents within yourself [Apr. 8th, 2008|01:54 pm]

Am I the only one who misses the days when fortune cookies actually had fortunes in them? These days it seems all I get is some sort of cheesy advice:

"Discover the talents within yourself"

That is no fortune - it's just some sort of advice (and rather poor, useless advice at that). Though I suppose the value of the advice may increase somewhat if you add the honorary "in bed" to the end of it.

Anyway, I just wish I could have a cheesy fortune telling me that I'm about to win a bunch of money or something.

On a related note, this has bothered me for some time. A few years ago when my wife and I had a small party, she made fortune cookies and I wrote up the fortunes. I specifically tailored them for our friends and they had a very adult theme about them. It was a big hit - though some of our friends couldn't bring themselves to read their fortunes out loud. My favorite was one of the more subtle -

"You will achieve enlightenment on your knees"

Though the most prophetic was

"You will never graduate"

Most of us were still in grad school at this time - my friend who got this one still hasn't graduated with his PhD some 7 years later - everyone else has long-since graduated of course.

[mood | angry]

I am getting incredibly tired of hearing all this talk about more guns solving problems:

-guns in schools will prevent shootings
-guns in national parks make us safer
-laws that restrict hand guns are evil

etc.

Any politician that represents me will immediately loose my vote if they support anything that means more guns in public places.

I could just shoot someone (see, more guns just means more shooting which is bad)

And I just heard that Arthur C. Clake just died - it's just been a bummer of day.

It's more than a bit flawed, but a lot of fun for the like minded (and I'm really a bit surprised with the conclusion - I'm not what one would consider working class or blue-collar).

How to Win a Fight With a Conservative is the ultimate survival guide for political arguments

My Liberal Identity:

You are a Working Class Warrior, also known as a blue-collar Democrat. You believe that the little guy is getting screwed by conservative greed-mongers and corporate criminals, and you’re not going to take it anymore.

A donation has been made in your name [Dec. 14th, 2007|10:12 am]
Have you noticed that there are lots of people giving ethical presents this year?  You can buy a cow for Africa, school books for disadvantaged communities, even pineapple plants for poor communities.  Well ___, on your behalf, has decided to do the same!

This came throught corporate announcements this year - Seinfeld anyone! I had to laugh.

Truth is they are making some nice donations to good causes, but I got good laugh out of it anyway - in a very cynical way.

Beer Me [Sep. 17th, 2007|03:33 pm]
You Are Guinness

You know beer well, and you'll only drink the best beers in the world.
Watered down beers disgust you, as do the people who drink them.
When you drink, you tend to become a bit of a know it all - especially about subjects you don't know well.
But your friends tolerate your drunken ways, because you introduce them to the best beers around.

Well, it's mostly correct. I do know my beer and I know what I like. Of course I don't think Guiness is really a proper beer snob drink - it's far too common. Anyway, I also feel that just about every beer has it's time and place - even something as watered down and bad tasting as a bud light. Believe me, after a long day working outside in the 110+ degree heat of Arizona, a bud light tastes pretty darn good.

My favorite beer: the beer I (and a few close friends) brew. Now that's good stuff.
